3-d Image Processing as the Key for a Flexible Manufacturing Cell for the Autonomous Welding of Large Steel Structures

A flexible manufacturing cell for the autonomous welding of large steel structures was developed in the European Commission’s Fifth Framework Programme “Growth”. The system consists of a mobile robot platform (robot transport vehicle or RTV), which carries all components for autonomous welding and the key technology of optical 3-D metrology, which determines the location of the robot platform and the part to be welded. Simulation software is used to define the logistic processes of path planning, robot motion and the welding process.
